Recently, I’ve been big on making my own soy yogurt! I like to serve it with some seasonal fruit and some type of cereal. And what could be better served with yogurt and seasonal fruit, other than delicious muesli that you prep yourself according to your personal preference with minimal effort and for cheap? Let’s do it!
Making Homemade Muesli Mix is a super easy 2-step process:
- Layer grains, nuts and seeds, dried fruit, and spices in a jar,
- Close the jar and give it a good shake until all the ingredients are well integrated!
Aside from going through the process of making your own muesli mix, we will look at how you can enjoy your muesli – both hot and cold!
This post is all about How To Make Homemade Muesli Mix!
Ingredients You Will Need To Make Homemade Muesli Mix
Grains
The basis of this homemade muesli mix is rolled oats, which is an accessible and affordable grain.
You can buy rolled oats in most grocery stores. Online, you can buy rolled oats at Amazon or Faithful To Nature (RSA Only!).
To mix things up, you can experiment with adding other grains to the mix, such as whole barley, wheat bran, puffed rice, puffed sorghum, whole rye, etc.
Seeds And Nuts
I love seeds and always have some in stock, yet never find myself eating them regularly. This muesli mix recipe, really helps me conveniently consume more of these nutritional powerhouses!!
For this muesli mix, I love pumpkin and sunflower seeds. I avoid smaller seeds in this mix because they just end up at the bottom of the jar when stored and rather try to stick to ingredients that are similar in size.

Flaked almonds and coconut flakes are two great options to add nuts to this mix! Coconut flakes add a wonderful subtle sweetness, that I love!

Dried Fruit
My absolute favorite dried fruit is dried cranberries and usually opt to add those to my muesli mix. But, anything goes!! You could add chopped dates, raisins, apple chips, etc.

Spices (Optional)
Last but not least, I like to add a pinch of cinnamon to my mix, but this is entirely optional!
How To Make Homemade Muesli Mix
The easiest way to make homemade muesli mix is by layering your grains, nuts and seeds, dried fruit, and spices in a jar (with airtight lid), closing it up, and giving it a good old shake!
Store it in an airtight jar and enjoy it for the next week(s).
How To Enjoy Your Homemade Muesli Mix
Generally, muesli is prepared by either soaking or cooking it.
Soaked Muesli (Cold)
Soaked or overnight muesli is the easiest muesli dish to meal prep! Simply add 1/4 cup of muesli to a mason jar and cover it with 1/2 cup of yogurt. Give it a stir and add some fresh fruit on top. Seal it and store it in the fridge overnight or for up to 4 days. This recipe is pictured above!
You could also prep Bircher muesli, the original soaked muesli, by combining 1/4 cup of muesli, 1/2 cup of yogurt, and 1 grated apple. Don’t worry, the apple won’t turn brown if you make sure that the apple is well integrated into the mixture and you tightly close the lid of your jar.
You could also soak muesli in milk or fruit juice if you desire.
Cooked Muesli (Warm)
If you prefer to eat your cereal hot, you can cook muesli on the stove or in the microwave. Cooking muesli is the same process as cooking plain rolled oats. You can cook it in water or milk. I usually use a 1:2 ratio of oats versus water or milk.
